As the seasons change and you prepare for colder weather, it is important to schedule a duct cleaning as well. Ducts often accumulate dust, dirt, and other allergens over time which can lead to poor air quality in your home. Here are 6 steps that you can take before a scheduled duct cleaning so that they will be prepared when the technician arrives:
Change the filter:
If you have a disposable air filter, change it out. If your furnace has an electronic air cleaner read just its settings according to the instructions that came with your unit.
Note: Filters should be cleaned or replaced at least every 3 months. Electronic air cleaners should be readjusted to the settings that came with them.
Vacuum:
If you have carpet, use the vacuum to remove any dust or dirt that has accumulated on it. This will help prevent some of these particles from being stirred into the air again during your
duct cleaning.
Clean surfaces in rooms near vents:
Clean up any dust and dirt on the surface of appliances, furniture, windowsills, or other surfaces in rooms near where vents are located. This will also help prevent some particles from being stirred into the air again during your duct cleaning.
Note: If you have a lot of pet hair in your home that can’t be vacuumed, use a lint roller to remove the hair from furniture, rugs, and clothes. This will make the cleaning process much easier.
Remove plants, furniture, and other objects:
If you have things like potted plants or fragile items around the room where your vent registers are located, it’s best to move these to another location before your scheduled duct cleaning. The cleaner needs to access all vents to protect against any dust being stirred up and into the air.
Note: No pets should be in the room during the cleaning process and it is recommended to remove all plants.
Remove clutter:
Clutter can make it hard for a duct cleaner to access vents in your home so before they arrive, Tidy up anything located near where vents are found. This will help the technician get more done during their allotted time with you!
Turn off all electronics:
Shut down any computers, TVs, or other electronic devices that may produce an electromagnetic field in the room.
Note: This is good advice for any time you do an air duct cleaning. Doing this will ensure that the equipment used to clean your ducts won't interfere with any electronics that are on in your home.
